The National Institute of Fashion Technology, or NIFT, is India’s preeminent institute for studying subjects and courses related to the world of fashion. It is a government institute which attracts thousands of applicants every year. It has campuses spread all across the country, with more opening every few years. NIFT offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses. It currently has more than eleven thousand students on its rolls, with this number increasing every year. Admission to NIFT is decided on the basis of the NIFT Entrance Exam, which is held every year.

The NIFT Entrance Exam in 2021 will be held in the pen and paper format. The duration of the test depends on the course that you are applying to, and your performance in each of the sections of the exam. The NIFT syllabus consists of the Creative Ability Test or CAT, and the General Ability Test, or GAT. The CAT is of three hours duration, while the GAT is of two hours duration. In the NIFT syllabus 2021, like always, the two tests will have different syllabi and test different aspects of the candidate.

The CAT is a pen and paper-based exam that tests observation, concept development, ideation, intuition, perspective, and other creative skills of the candidate. In general, topics such as observation power, discernment ability, design ability, and thought development have been regularly tested across the years. Candidates are given a prompt and required to create an illustration based on it. The illustration is generally also supposed to be accompanied with a write-up.

The GAT is the more scholarly section of the NIFT Entrance Examination. It is a multiple-choice based exam that is two hours in duration, where the candidate has to choose from four options where one is the correct choice. The total number of questions is 100, and the topics included are general knowledge and current affairs, quantitative ability, communication ability, analytical ability and English comprehension. General knowledge and current affairs generally contain basic items from the news, and questions may be related to any field. Quantitative ability requires basic mathematical skills, with questions that require more of quick solving than rigorous calculation of any kind. The communication ability section of the GAT tests basic English grammar, and your ability to write and converse effectively in English of daily usage. It may have synonyms, antonyms, one-word answers, grammatical errors, and so forth. Analytical ability is a reasoning section, which requires the use of logic and pattern recognition. Finally, English comprehension contains passages based on which the candidate is required to answer questions. The breakup of the questions is 25 questions in the English Comprehension section, 20 in Quantitative Ability, 25 in Communication Ability, 15 in Analytical Ability and 15 in General Knowledge and Current Affairs.

Candidates who clear the CAT and GAT may then sit for the Situation Test. The Situation Test tests the material handling and innovative ability of the candidates. Here, the evaluation of candidates is based on concepts such as spatial visualization, the innovation and creativity exhibited in the use of a material, construction skill, colour scheme, the model finesse, the presentation of the model, and so forth. Alongside, a write-up regarding the model the candidate has created is also required.

The weightage given to each of the sections, as well as the sections you are required to sit for is not fixed and may change. You may also have to appear for a group discussion and an interview round. The NIFT exam tests the all-round abilities of the candidate to the fullest and ensures the best of the best make it to the prestigious institute.
