What You Should Know about Getting an Arizona Insurance License

There are a few steps you need to take in order to get your Arizona insurance license.

Complete a Pre-License Course: In order to sell insurance in the state, you do have to pass a licensing exam. The best way to prepare for the licensing exam is to take an insurance course. There are different pre-license courses available in different formats. You can choose to take a class in a classroom, online, or even self-study.

Get Fingerprinted: In order to take the exam for the first time, you will need to be fingerprinted. Only those who already have an existing Arizona insurance license and are just adding a new authority will be exempt from the requirement. This also only applies for those who have submitted fingerprints to the Arizona Department of Insurance in the last year. If you have your current license and haven’t been fingerprinted in a year, you will need to do new ones.

The requirement for fingerprints can be met on the exam day or before the exam. You must use a Live Scan fingerprinting vendor. You will pay a fee to the Live Scan vendor, but it will not cover the FBI processing fee, which will be added to your license fee payment.

Pass the Licensing Exam: Next, you will take the exam. You have to take one exam for each line of insurance you wish to carry. Accident and Health, and Property and Casualty are combined in the state, so you will have to take two exams if you want to get these lines of authority. The test is proctored and will be done in a controlled environment.

When you go to take the test you have to bring a photo ID and any documents that the testing facility has asked you to bring. Arrive to the exam site early, in order to have enough time to verify identification. No personal items are allowed in the room, such as cell phones. The tests are multiple choice. In order to pass the exam, you have to get a 70% score or higher. If you do not pass the exam, you can schedule the exam again without a waiting period. Depending on the exam you are taking, there will be between 100 and 150 questions and the exam time will vary based on how many questions there are.

Some of the exam will contain experimental questions that are mixed in with the scored questions, but they will not be identified. These questions may not be covered under the education materials, but they also do not affect the final score.

Apply for the License: The last step is to complete the license application online after passing the exam. Be sure to submit all the necessary paperwork so there isn’t a delay.
